Chase Scrolls

William Alexander Chase born in Costa Rica on April 18, 1901 ~ arrived in Boston, Ma, by ship, at 12-13 yrs old after his mother died with the aid of his oldest brother Charlie(who worked for the canal). His brother had given Will a new suit & when they arrived in Boston it was snowing. Will was so afraid his brand new suit would be ruined by the snow. The elevated trains in Boston also scared him to death! From Boston they went to Virginia but Will didn't like it in Virginia so they went back to Brockton, MA. His brother had to leave him so Will moved in with a Swedish family & went to public school. Will only spoke Spanish & the family he lived with spoke Swedish. At school, only English was taught, so Will learned 2 new languages on his own! Later in life he was a member of the Vasa group (Swedish club) & spoke better Swedish than any other member. He became president of the group. ~ died August 5, 1961
